Having an outdoor living space is a brilliant way to bring more practicality to your garden. Instead of being a lovely green space that doesn’t really do much, it becomes a functional area to sit, chill, eat, drink and host guests.

There’s always a debate over whether you should have a patio or decking as your outdoor living space, but the truth is it doesn’t really matter. Either option is excellent, but neither is truly effective without this one amazing upgrade…

Add some shelter to your outdoor living space

Yep, that’s all there is to it!

This seems like such an obvious thing to do, but you’ll be amazed at how many people do not add shelter to their outdoor living spaces. It’s very important for a couple of reasons:

  1. It makes your deck or patio look much better and more homely

  2. It allows you to use your outdoor living space in different weather conditions

For example, if it starts raining, you can still sit under the shelter and enjoy the outside air. It also protects everything from the rain, meaning your outdoor furniture will last longer. Even better, it makes the outdoor space more practical when it’s super sunny. You can’t really be out in direct sunlight for too long, so having a little shelter will let you sit outside, be shaded, yet still enjoy the lovely weather!

How can you add shelter to your outdoor living area?

Thankfully, there are plenty of ways you can bring some shelter to your outdoor living area. These ideas vary in complexity and price, so feel free to pick whichever one works for you:

  • Install a pergola

  • Attach an awning to the side of your house

  • Get a temporary gazebo

A pergola is an outdoor structure that you can build on your patio or decking. It stays in a fixed position and can provide shelter from above. At the same time, you can pair this with some outdoor blinds to create even more shelter from the sun. This is perhaps the most expensive option, and also the one that requires the most effort. But, it’s also the prettiest!

An awning is basically a bit of coverage that extends from the side of your home. You can attach one to it, and then draw it out to create shade over your outdoor living area. It’s a relatively low-cost option, and excellent if you don’t have enough space around your deck/patio for the other two options.

Gazebos are similar to pergolas, only they’re more temporary. What this means is that you can erect a gazebo as a tent-like structure as and when you need it. So, during the colder months when you’re not outside as much, you can pack it away and keep it in your garage.

As you can see, there are plenty of ideas to consider. The most important takeaway is that covering your outdoor space is an excellent home upgrade. It brings more functionality and practicality to your outdoor living area, creating a more comfortable place to chill and relax.
